Craig Kelly was a fairly unremarkable backbench Liberal MP before Covid 19. He could reliably be expected to say something very conservative, and often extremely contrarian to the point of comedy, every 6 months or so that would get in the newspapers and remind his electorate that he existed. Theatricality and deception are powerful agents to the uninitiated.
However in 2020 he burst onto the compass of any slightly news savvy Australian with his promotion of endless covid quackery. Craig did not come as a conqueror in his mind, but as a liberator. To return control of the choice of alternative vaccine medications that private citizens were free to go an buy en mass to the people! Craig Kelly was the biggest fan of hydroxychloroquine in Australia for a while. Then moved on to ivermectin with rest of his fellow truth seekers who, in our opinion, were definitely not using partisan tensions to grift their audiences for profit, in our opinion.
However, Craig's status as the former king of anti-vax information and alternative facts on Australian Facebook is not the full story. For Craig Kelly did not think covid hysteria was his ally. He was merely adopted by the anti-vax crowd. Not born in it, formed by it. No, Craig Kelly didn't see the light until he was already a man. And by then it was nothing to him but blinding.
Ok, no more Baneposting. That would be extremely painful...for you. To read.
Below you will find lists and links to factual accounts, and nothing more then factual accounts and opinion, of Craig Kelly's exploits prior to and during the coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully you find the below information informative and interesting enough to consider spreading the word about this website to your friends.
In 2016 Craig Kelly gave a speech in federal parliament where he claimed that due to renewable energy, more children were going to drown in pools.
To quote Huffpost Australia :
The member for Hughes spoke about a swimming centre in his Sydney electorate, the owners of which had complained about the rising costs of power -- which they need to filter and heat the pool water -- and claimed their business would be $100,000 worse off under previous power policies.
"I hate to harp on this", Kelly said, before adding that "I don't want to make this issue on drownings about other partisan issues" and that "if we raise the cost of electricity in this country, the burden is paid by those centres that pay the electricity bills and it's higher costs for swimming lessons".
"We cannot ignore that fact in this parliament that there are policies being put in by governments, both state and federal, that are increasing the costs of electricity, and by doing so, we increase the cost of kids' swimming lessons."
A stretch indeed by any measure. Swimming lessons are a large part of many Australian childhoods given our love of the beach. But trying to tie increased power costs to increased swimming class prices is...well it's something of an argument. Naturally Craig Kelly proposed that the cause of these power rises is renewable energy. Despite it largely providing a better chance at lowering prices and adding redundancy via spreading out the power grid and distributing power generation, plus increasing reliability with battery storage, in our opinion and the opinion of many scientists and engineers.
However, Craig Kelly went on further to also say the growing density of Australian cities was also to blame for more child drownings. Again, quoting Huffpost:
Kelly had earlier said housing policies could be to blame for child drownings.
"The issue I see going forward is if we look at our housing policies in our cities, we're having more and more children growing up in high-rise apartments where they're unlikely to have a backyard swimming pool where they can learn to live," he said.
"I think of my experience growing up in Peakhurst, just a middle class suburb in the south of Sydney, many of our neighbours had the simple backyard swimming pool... we got in as kids and we learned to swim. That opportunity will be denied to thousands and thousands of young kids because of the change of housing policy in this nation where more and more children will be growing up in high rise apartments."
It should be noted that in the period covering 2015-2016 the number of drownings for all people 18 or under in Australia was well actually below the average of the last ten years by around 30%. With the exception of people aged 10-14 who saw an increase due to the number of drownings going up to 6. One count over the 10 year-average of 5.
Craig declared that due to this historic crisis that he claimed existed, power subsidies were needed for all swimming schools. And mandatory swimming lessons be introduced and provided to schools. Ignoring of course that most, keyword 'most', state governments and local councils already provide extensively subsidized swimming lessons for children already.
It's hilarious in hindsight to note that Craig Kelly was adamantly in favour of public health mandates for children here. Where's the freedom to choose here Craig? What if a parent doesn't want to teach their child to swim because their religion forbids touching any ocean, river, or lake as all bodies of water are gateways to the devil of Atlantis? Very short sighted thinking Craig.
